Curio 7.4
Tuesday, March 15, 2011
Curio 7.4 just strolled out the door with lots of good tweaks and fixes which I'm sure you'll all enjoy.Certainly the first thing you'll notice is a brand new icon courtesy of the amazingly talented cuberto! The fine detail wowed all the designers at dribbble when he posted the preview. We love it too! (Click the icon for a 512x512 closeup.)
All the new enhancements and bug fixes are based on emails and postings in our forums so we wholeheartedly appreciate all your feedback.

Nothing wrong with the icon itself, just that it looks like at least 500 other modern app icons. How can anyone remember that that one belongs to Curio?

hate the icon. i thought curio was supposed to be a white board? Now it looks like my mother's day-timer.

"Hate" is pretty extreme, don't you think?
I think the new icon is well executed and distinctive in the doc...and it in no way makes Curio any less amazing a tool.

I agree with beaterud--the icon is nicely done, but way too generic. Couldn't you at least add an embossed C or something to the front of the book? And, yes, it is a bit too daytimerish...

George,
Did you hate how I used "hate?" why can't I hate it? last time i checked, i'm living in the u.s. of a.
having said that, the previous logo was cool: it made me feel like i was buying a cool product that let me do my work. i wanted a white board. the logo makes me feel like i have a big day-timer from the 80s. that's so old school and doesn't do the product any justice.
please change it! it might be cool in North Carolina, but it certainly ain't cool in California.

You are certainly welcome to hate it. We had lots of customers that hated the previous icon. It's hard to make a single icon that the entire world loves -- that's what makes it art. :-)
Fortunately we've received tons of emails from customers who love the icon so perhaps it all balances out.

What I like about the new icon:
If you don't know the program yet, it gives you a better idea what it's all about. Just imagine you're in the app store and you see the old icon ... together with the very cool name - that still contains no real clue what the prog is all about. With the new icon, you get a hint.
What I dislike:
For some reason, I now need longer to "find" curio in my dock (... which is probably a little overloaded anyway... .) But maybe that's just a matter of getting used to it.
Still I like the idea of a big embossed blue "C" on the cover, to make it stand out of all the other notebook-like ikons.

I like being modern. I like my iPod touch because it's small. I always carry a very thin camera. I roll my eyes when my boss comes in with his bulging day-timer. In my mind the new icon does not represent that curio is a powerhouse. I too vote to at least have your signature blue logo encrusted on top.

George,
The last time I checked, Zengobi's #1 is to encourage creativity. How is that day timer icon creative? That's the most "in the box" idea I've ever seen. The previous icon is creative.

I agree with anonymous. Think about branding. Once people see the logo they will immediately think it's some type of journal or planning application. There are millions of those and people don't buy them because they don't work. You need a logo that does justice to what Curio is. It's not a journal or a calendar app. It's much, much more.

I never thought that even an icon could break my heart...

Hi, I'd like to add support to those who are critical about the new logo. I don't go so far as to hate it but it's definitely less distinctive than the former logo was. It's very nicely done, indeed (but you don't see all the nice detail when you place it in the dock). However, it looks really like so many other planning or calender apps. I often like retro style stuff but this logo doesn't do justice to what curio is. You wouldn't suppose to find video material or audio recordings in a daytimer. The logo doesn't express that curio brings the very idea of a daytimer to the IT-and-web-age. I don't know if it was really a good idea to simply add the old Curio-logo on top of the new logo. And I admit that the old logo didn't tell what is hiding behind it. But it was cool and modern and distinctive. Well, I'll get used to the new logo. George wouldn't it be possible to leave the user with the choice which logo he wants to see every day? I would like to replace the new logo by the old one for my personal use... Maybe not a very good idea for a company that wants to have a brand with all that belongs to that?

yes, please give us a choice. I hate looking at the logo. It's starting to bug me.

You know Curio is a standard Mac OS application so there's a standard way to customize app icons, right?
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2493
You can download old Curio's from our Support page. You can find lots of other icons from iconfinder, etc.
Customize to your heart's content. It's a Mac! :-)
