Dieter Rams: good design

Wednesday, June 01, 2011

The 10 Principles of Good Design by Dieter Rams has been making the rounds on the blogosphere lately. Apple's Jonathan Ive gets a lot of his inspiration from Dieter Rams with his minimalist product designs and concepts.

This topic seems appropriate for a number of our Curio customers so I thought I'd include it here as well.
  1. Good design is innovative.
  2. Good design makes a product useful.
  3. Good design is aesthetic.
  4. Good design makes a product understandable.
  5. Good design is unobtrusive.
  6. Good design is honest.
  7. Good design is long-lasting.
  8. Good design is thorough, down to the last details.
  9. Good design is environmentally-friendly.
  10. Good design is as little design as possible.
I encourage you to read the original posting to see associated images and additional details regarding each topic.

  • Hi George,

I'm guessing you already saw it, but if not: 'Objectified' is an excellent documentary on industrial design; Dieter Rams has a short part. Netflix has it.

  • By amazing coincidence I watched the blu-ray from Netflix just a few days ago. Absolute fantastic documentary.

I took copious notes while watching. :-)
